About the Film

Ijaw Cultural Heritage Relating to Water (2024) is a documentary that explores the profound connection between the Ijaw people and water. Located in the coastal regions of the Niger Delta, Nigeria. Ijaw communities have thrived for centuries, relying on the region’s vast waterways for sustenance, identity, and cultural continuity.

Using Ijaw culture as its foundation, the work explores three key pillars: the significance of water and aquatic life as sources of livelihood and memory; ancestral worship and spiritual practice as forms of active guidance; and community as the space where elders pass knowledge and tradition on to younger generations. Through the lens of film, we translate oral histories into visual language.

As twin artists, our film represents duality, lineage, and continuity—the past and present in dialogue. The project aims to preserve and promote Ijaw heritage, demonstrate the continued relevance of traditional practices, and inspire a new generation to reconnect with ancestral wisdom.

Ijaw Cultural Heritage is not simply documentation; it is an invocation. It positions both itself and film as vessels of cultural memory, arguing that the archive is not static but alive within the body. This work extends our mission as the Slaytwins: to bridge heritage and innovation, making tradition accessible to global audiences while keeping it sacred for our people.
