Omenaala is a series of hyperrealistic charcoal portraits inspired by my experience growing up within Igbo culture. I was raised surrounded by traditions that gave me identity, belonging, and a deep appreciation for community. As I grew older, however, I became more aware of the expectations placed on individuals, especially around social roles and conformity to established ideals. This shift created a moment of reflection that opened my eyes to the realities of the social systems I once accepted without question. This body of work explores the conflict between cultural pride and personal agency. Through detailed portraiture and symbolic imagery, I examine how traditions can both nurture and restrict the people who inherit them. The project considers the emotional struggle of trying to belong while still maintaining a clear sense of self. Rather than rejecting culture, my work seeks to open honest conversations about the often unspoken burdens endured in the name of cultural identity, preservation of values and the desire to be accepted within contemporary African society.
